Wild to Widespread Initiative
Growing native seed supply Infrastructure for California’s pollinator plants
Every species on earth relies on plants for one or more parts of it's lifecycle. Food security, water, and pollinators depend on healthy ecosystems and biodiversity for a healthy future on planet earth.
Native Habitat, in partnership with the University of California Nature Natural Reserve System is growing native seed supply from precious wild sources (first generation seed stock) to abundant seed supply.
Our pilot project: Elderberry propagation studies and seed amplification.
Collected Wild Elderberry seeds from 5 locations.
Propagated and donated 780 elderberry plants.
Supported 10+ living seed banks.
Collected seeds from 25 CA native pollinator species.
The Model: From Wild to Widespread
- Ethically wild harvest (1st generation seed)
- Plant at land trusts, farms, gardens
- Harvest 2nd generation seed
- Distribute widely within conservation networks
- Monitor and repeat for diversity and scale
Our Vision for 2026 & Beyond
- Expand to 75 native pollinator species.
- Repeat elderberry propagation studies with 2nd generation seed
- New living seed bank sites by Fall 2027
- Establish Central Coast hub for seed operations
- Grow Community Stewardship
